Alpha and theta mechanisms operating in internal-external attention competition

چکیده

Attention is the ability to prioritize a set of information at expense others and can be internally- or externally-oriented. Alpha theta oscillations have been extensively implicated in attention. However, it unclear how these operate when sensory distractors are presented continuously during task-relevant internal processes, close-to-real-life conditions. Here, EEG signals from healthy participants were obtained rest three attentional conditions, characterized by execution mental math task (internal attention), presentation pictures on monitor (external under distracting action picture (internal-external competition). power investigated scalp level some cortical regions interest (ROIs); moreover, functional directed connectivity was estimated via spectral Granger Causality. Results show that frontal midline distinctive more prominent competition compared attention alone, possibly reflecting higher executive control; anterior cingulate cortex appeared as mainly involved causally connected distant (temporal/occipital) regions. visual ROIs strongly decreased external while assumed values close competition, reduced engagement against distractors; results suggested bidirectional alpha influences between could contribute reduce interference This study help understand our brain copes with internal-external condition intrinsic human sensory-cognitive interplay, elucidate relationships functions/dysfunctions daily tasks.

A taxonomy of external and internal attention.

Attention is a core property of all perceptual and cognitive operations. Given limited capacity to process competing options, attentional mechanisms select, modulate, and sustain focus on information most relevant for behavior. A significant problem, however, is that attention is so ubiquitous that it is unwieldy to study. We propose a taxonomy based on the types of information that attention o...

External noise distinguishes attention mechanisms

We developed and tested a powerful method for identifying and characterizing the effect of attention on performance in visual tasks as due to signal enhancement, distractor exclusion, or internal noise suppression. Based on a noisy Perceptual Template Model (PTM) of a human observer, the method adds increasing amounts of external noise (white gaussian random noise) to the visual stimulus and ob...

Similar and dissociable mechanisms for attention to internal versus external information

We compared two attentional executive processes: updating, which involved attending to a perceptually present stimulus, and refreshing, which involved attending to a mentally active representation of a stimulus no longer perceptually present. In separate blocks, participants either replaced a word being held in working memory with a different word (update), or they thought back to a just previo...

The Effect of External and Internal Focus of Attention on Shot Put Skill

The purpose of the present study was to study the effect of attentional focus instructions on motor skills that requiring near to maximum force production, such as shot put skill. In this experiment, twenty eight right- handed girl students with little shot put experience were selected voluntarily. They divided to two groups (internal and external focus) based on their shot put scores in pre- t...
